If you’ve lived in Assam for a while, you probably remember the old way of getting a certificate. It usually meant taking a whole day off, standing in a humid line at the Circle Office, and hoping the right clerk was actually at their desk. It was... a lot.
Thankfully, the Sewa Setu portal has changed that. It’s not perfect—government websites rarely are—but it’s a massive improvement. Whether you're a student scrambling for a Caste Certificate before college admissions close or you're trying to get an Income Certificate for a scholarship, you can do it from your couch now.
First, the "Paperwork" (The Digital Kind)
Don’t even bother opening the website until you have your scans ready. The system will time you out if you spend twenty minutes looking for a file.
- For the Caste Certificate: You’ll need the usual ID (Aadhaar is easiest) and proof of age. But the "make or break" document is the Gaonburah’s report. Also, if your father has a certificate, scan it. It acts as "legacy data" and makes the whole thing go way faster.
- For the Income Certificate: You need proof of what you earn. If you’re salaried, a pay slip works. If not, you’ll need that Gaonburah report again to verify your family's annual income.
Navigating the Sewa Setu Portal
Go to sewasetu.assam.gov.in. It’s the main hub now—pretty much everything else has been folded into this.
- The Login Part: Register with your phone number. You’ll get an OTP. Just a heads-up: sometimes the OTP takes a minute during peak hours. Be patient.
- Finding your Service: Use the search bar. Type "Caste" or "Income" and hit enter.
- Picking the Circle Office: This is where people mess up. You must pick the Circle Office that covers your permanent address. If you pick the wrong one, they’ll sit on it for two weeks and then reject it.
The Submission and the "Wait"
After you fill in your details—double-check your name spelling!—you’ll upload those scans we talked about. Then comes the payment. It’s usually a nominal fee, around ₹30. I’ve found that paying via UPI (GPay/PhonePe) is much more reliable than using a card.
The Acknowledgement Receipt: Once you pay, the site will spit out a PDF receipt with an "Application Number." Do not lose this. Take a screenshot or email it to yourself. It’s the only way to track your progress.
What happens next?
Now, we wait. Usually, it takes anywhere from 10 to 30 days. You can log back in anytime to "Track Status."
- Under Process: It’s moving.
- Reverted: They found a mistake. Read the comment, fix it, and resubmit.
- Delivered: You’re good! Download the PDF. It has a digital signature and QR code, so it’s 100% legal as-is.
It’s a bit of a chore, but it’s definitely better than the old days. Just take it step by step, and make sure your scans are readable.
